Some Things Just Play Better With Music

I remember my older sister playing her radio loudly while we cleaned our bedrooms on Saturdays when I was small. I grew up on the Beatles, CCR, Iron Butterfly and The Supremes. Somehow listening to the music made the work go down better. Forget the spoonful of sugar, it's music does the trick.

I'm not a great singer, but I love to sing. I can't remember a time when I didn't sing. My parents sang around the house. My mother would sing, "I wonder why nobody don't love me. Or is it a fact that I'm ugly?" My dad would sing, "I talk to the trees, but they don't listen to me." I always thought the songs were made up until I became acquainted with Harry Belafonte and Paint Your Wagon. So maybe this singing around the house is in my blood. I only know that I can't imagine not singing around the house.

In the movie About A Boy the lead character, Will, talks about watching other characters "singing with their eyes closed" and cringing because it was just too much--too much emotion, too much letting go, while they belted out the song, while they felt the song. Sometimes you just have to belt out a song or it doesn't quite feel right. Do you know what I mean? Will finally changes when he, too, experiences the joy of singing with his eyes closed. Sometimes you just have to, really have to sing with your eyes closed. Do you know what I mean?

All I know is that there are things that are really more fun, more pleasurable, more meaningful when you sing, even with your eyes opened. So these are some of the situations where I like to sing:

  • In the pews at church. I really love a good hymn.
  • Doing the dishes.
  • Taking a shower.
  • Cooking.
  • Driving, especially at night on an open highway. Yep, this one is the best.
So tell me, where do you sing? And do you ever sing with your eyes closed?

I refuse to believe you grew up listening to the Beatles. If you did, why did you forbid me from listening to them?

I agree with Laurie. That was a pretty controversial time for our family.

I agree with Sean and Laurie. I also can't believe you didn't mention Mamma Mia in this post.

There's a long story about that....

I won't get into family politics, but this post was great! I don't remember seeing this movie, but I love to sing... love to have music all around me playing... love to sing in all the places you mentioned...

But you never knew the reason people close their eyes to sing??? It's where I post all the words so I can read them and make people believe I am remembering them!

I've thought a lot about your singing post. Years ago, I took lessons to learn to play the guitar so I would be ready if Willie Nelson or Eric Clapton ever needed me to sit in on tour with them. (Think about that for a moment.)

The only thing I remember from that series of community education guitar lessons is from the class that was taught by a substitute teacher because our regular guy was out of town. The sub was a guy who'd played with REO Speedwagon for a while--or at least, that's the name that comes to mind right now--anyway, he told us that if you're going to play a guitar and sing in a rock and roll band, you have to sing loud, whether you can sing or not. Just make it loud. So that's been my singing style pretty much ever since. Especially while driving in the car by myself. Full volume with my eyes closed.

Okay. Maybe not the closed eyes part. But definitely full volume in the car.

I know that I'm going to be like you and your parents too. I sing real songs all the time and then I add my own lyrics to real songs...and then, of course, I also make up my own songs.

My kids aren't going to know what songs were real or not! They'll have to do some sleuthing to figure it out!

I must have missed Laurie's Beatles drama! I just remember you buying her Beatles gifts for Christmas and birthdays!
